In combination with water, this reliably generates heat to heat meals.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Chemical composition<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In a sturdy, porous, food-grade bag is a large amount of food-grade magnesium powder (this is the fuel), salt (as a catalyst to speed up the reaction) and a small amount of iron powder (to regulate the reaction). The ratio of these ingredients is carefully controlled to ensure a vigorous but controllable exothermic reaction.<\/p>\n<p>The heat is generated by a so-called exothermic reaction between magnesium (Mg) and water (H\u2082O). The salt acts as a catalyst and accelerates the reaction. The simplified chemical equation is: Mg + 2H\u2082O \u2192 Mg(OH)\u2082 + H\u2082 (heat + hydrogen gas). The amount of gas is small and evaporates quickly under normal conditions.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Release of carbon monoxide (CO)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The heating pad often contains other components, including carbon (in the form of activated carbon or powder) and an oxidizing agent. At the high temperatures generated by the primary reaction, the carbon can react with the available oxygen in an incomplete combustion process. This incomplete combustion produces carbon monoxide (CO) as a secondary by-product.
