A HEAT.me pad generates heat through an exothermic reaction as soon as it comes into contact with water. It contains a special blend of minerals that, when combined with water, safely and efficiently release heat to warm your food.
The temperature that your food reaches and the duration of the heating process depend on the consistency of the food and the ambient temperature. Liquid dishes (e.g. soups) generally become hotter and warm up more quickly than very solid dishes.
Practical examples:
No, HEAT.me pads are designed for single use. After activation and use, they must be disposed of in accordance with the disposal instructions.
The HEAT.me pads have been specially developed for safe and efficient use with the HEAT.me lunchboxes (Premium Lunchbox Kit and GRILL & CHILL Lunchbox). Use in other containers is not recommended as the material, ventilation and fit are designed to work together for optimum results and safety.
After use, allow the pad to cool completely. The cooled pad can then simply be disposed of with household waste.
No power. No gas. No open flame. And still: a hot meal – anywhere.
Our mineral-based heating pads make it possible.
Just add 60 ml of water – and a remarkably simple reaction begins:
Water meets minerals, and within seconds, hot steam is released, gently and evenly heating your food.
Whether you're out in nature, on the road, or in the middle of a busy day – this principle is as ingenious as it is reliable.
Heat when and where you need it. Independent. Effortless. Efficient.
While most heat sources rely on electricity, gas, or batteries, our heating pads take a radically simple approach: They heat your meal through a pure chemical reaction – no flame, no power source, no operational CO₂ emissions.
And the best part? The reaction only starts when you add water.
Simple. Safe. Anywhere.
A little water on the heating pad - and it immediately starts producing heat in the form of hot steam.
HEAT.me heating pads utilize the same proven technology used by the US Army: Food-grade magnesium powder, iron powder and salt. In combination with water, this reliably generates heat to heat meals.
In a sturdy, porous, food-grade bag is a large amount of food-grade magnesium powder (this is the fuel), salt (as a catalyst to speed up the reaction) and a small amount of iron powder (to regulate the reaction). The ratio of these ingredients is carefully controlled to ensure a vigorous but controllable exothermic reaction.
The heat is generated by a so-called exothermic reaction between magnesium (Mg) and water (H₂O). The salt acts as a catalyst and accelerates the reaction. The simplified chemical equation is: Mg + 2H₂O → Mg(OH)₂ + H₂ (heat + hydrogen gas). When water is added, the magnesium reacts violently and produces magnesium hydroxide and a large amount of heat.
The reaction produces a small amount of hydrogen gas (H₂), which is flammable. Therefore, the heating pad should always be used in a **well ventilated area**. **never** use it in a completely sealed, airtight room. The amount of gas is small and evaporates quickly under normal conditions.
The heating pad often contains other components, including carbon (in the form of activated carbon or powder) and an oxidizing agent. At the high temperatures generated by the primary reaction, the carbon can react with the available oxygen in an incomplete combustion process. This incomplete combustion produces carbon monoxide (CO) as a secondary by-product. The quantity is generally low, but not zero, which is why ventilation is essential.
Magnesium is a remarkable metal which, when combined with water, triggers a chemical reaction that releases heat. This reaction is safe, controllable and does not produce an open flame - a decisive advantage in military operations and also for you.
Even though our heating pads are not exactly the same as those used by the US Army, we use the same basic principle. We have refined this proven technology to provide you with a safe, efficient and convenient way to keep your food warm on the go. Whether you're on your lunch break, during outdoor activities, in the gym, train or car, camping, hiking, at festivals or in emergency situations such as a power cut - with our heating pads you'll be able to prepare a hot meal anywhere and anytime.
All it takes is water – from a tap, a stream, or a lake. In a pinch, even tea, beer, or other available liquids will trigger the reaction.
Enjoy a hot meal even when clean drinking water is scarce. Perfect for outdoor adventures, travel, or emergency kits.
Our heating pads are designed to efficiently warm up meals of up to 400 g – the standard portion size found in most ready-made meals.
That means a complete, satisfying hot meal – anytime, anywhere.
Need more? No problem.
Use two pads for larger portions – just allow a little extra time for heating.
Cold, rain, snow? No reason to go without a hot meal.
Our heating pads give you warm food even in the harshest conditions.
Pro tip for freezing days: Use two pads in a row for reliably cozy eating temperatures – over 60 °C.
For best results: Use them with our specially designed Lunchbox Kit. Pick your favorite kit – and stay independent, no matter the weather.
Our heating pads work without open flames or fossil fuels. They generate heat only when needed – precisely and without wasting energy.
Paired with a durable lunchbox, they create a smart, sustainable system for meals on the go.
In combination with our lunchbox kit, this creates a well thought-out, sustainable system for on the go.
with a ready meal or a home-cooked meal. Add a little water to speed up the heating process and then put the lunch box in the lunch bag.
into the protective cover and use it as a base for the lunchbox. Make sure that the heating pad covers the entire base of the lunchbox. This ensures that the heat is distributed evenly.
with the dosing bottle into the protective cover and then close the lunch bag. Depending on the dish and ambient temperature, it will now take 15 to 30 minutes until your food is hot.
you can open the lunch bag and pull out the lunch box by the silicone strap. Open the freshness valve in the lid to make it easier to remove the lid. Enjoy your meal!
After activating the HEAT.me pad, you can dispose of it in an environmentally friendly way. The magnesium mixture that remains after the heating process is non-toxic and can be used as a nutrient for plants. Magnesium is an important component for plant development as it supports the photosynthesis process and promotes growth. You can scatter the used HEAT.me pad (without fleece) in the garden or on your potted plants to enrich the soil.
Note that not every soil is well suited to absorbing additional magnesium. Soils with a high magnesium content or particularly sensitive plants could react negatively. If you are unsure, test the mixture on a small area first or, alternatively, dispose of it in the household waste.
If you do not want to use the pad for plants, you can dispose of it in the normal household waste once it has cooled down completely. Make sure it has cooled down completely before you throw it away.
Lukewarm or room temperature water is ideal. Drinking water of any temperature will work, but colder water will take longer to heat up a meal.
Yes, but it is very inefficient. You need a large amount of snow to achieve the required amount of water and the reaction is very slow. It is better to melt the snow beforehand if you have the opportunity to do so
No, the vapor itself is not dangerous.
The steam produced during the chemical reaction is pure water vapor that heats the meal in the lunchbox. Your food does not come into contact with this clean, safe water vapor.
Important safety instructions:
Indirect contact only: The Lunchbox Kit is designed so that the meal to be heated is placed in the lunch box and heated by the steam. There is no direct contact between the chemicals and your meal.
Beware of scalding: Although the steam is not toxic, it is extremely hot (temperatures close to 100 °C). Make sure you keep your hands or face away from the steam outlet to avoid scalding.
Avoid contact with chemicals: The substances contained in the heating pad (magnesium, iron, salt) and the resulting liquid (salt water with magnesium hydroxide) are not suitable for consumption. Wash your hands after handling the heating pad and make sure that none of these substances get into your food.
No, the chemical reaction is a one-off process. Once the magnesium has reacted with the water, it cannot be reused.
No, the chemical reaction is a one-off process. Once the magnesium has reacted with the water, it cannot be reused.
Due to the possible release of flammable hydrogen gas during activation, self-heating meal kits are often classified as dangerous goods (HAZMAT) if they contain both the heating pad and the activating agent (water) in the same packaging.
Checked baggage vs. hand baggage
Transportation Security Administration (TSA) rules generally state that self-heating meals and beverage containers are prohibited in both carry-on and checked baggage if they contain the fuel and activator together. It is always safest to assume that they are not allowed and check with your airline beforehand.
The greatest risk does not come from the pack in your luggage, but from the activation in the cabin. In a pressurized, enclosed space, even a small amount of hydrogen gas can pose a fire risk if it comes into contact with an ignition source. In addition, the intense heat can damage the folding table or surrounding surfaces.
This is the most important step. Visit your airline's website or call their customer service to find out their specific guidelines for self-heating meals before your flight.
If your airline allows it, keep the food bag and the heating pads separate. Do not pack them together to give the impression that they are a single unit ready for activation.
Under no circumstances should you activate our heating pad in the aircraft. The heat and gases released are unsuitable for the cabin environment.
Given the complexity of the rules, it may be easier to bring food that can be eaten cold or ask a flight attendant to heat it for you using the aircraft's approved ovens (if available).
The heat is generated by an exothermic reaction between magnesium (Mg) and water (H₂O). The salt acts as a catalyst and accelerates the reaction. The simplified chemical equation is: Mg + 2H₂O → Mg(OH)₂ + H₂ (heat + hydrogen gas).
The reaction produces a small amount of hydrogen gas, which is flammable. Therefore, the heating pad should always be used in a well-ventilated area. Never use it in a completely sealed, airtight room. The amount of gas is small and evaporates quickly under normal conditions.
Too much water cools down the reaction and can result in a dish that is no longer as hot. Always follow the instructions for the correct amount of water.
If there is not enough water, the chemical reaction is incomplete. The heating pad will not reach its full temperature and your food will remain lukewarm.
No, it's not safe. A car is an enclosed space. Using our heating pad in the car, even with the window slightly open, can lead to a dangerous build-up of carbon monoxide. Always get out of the vehicle to activate and use it.
In general, the amount of CO is low. However, there is no „safe“ level of CO to inhale in an enclosed space. The risk arises from accumulation over time.
Therefore, only use the heating pad in well-ventilated rooms.
Hydrogen (H₂) is flammable and poses a fire hazard when exposed to a spark or flame. Carbon monoxide (CO) is toxic and poses a poisoning hazard if inhaled. Both are reasons to use these products in a well-ventilated area away from sources of ignition.
No, carbon monoxide can neither be seen nor smelled. It can only be detected with a calibrated CO detector. Never assume that a product is safe just because you don't notice anything
Magnesium and water-based technology always has the potential to generate CO as a by-product. Other heating technologies, such as electric or calcium oxide-based heaters, have different by-product profiles, but all require careful use and ventilation.
Stop using the product immediately, move to fresh air and seek medical attention. Inform medical personnel that you may have been exposed to carbon monoxide from a chemical heater.
Yes, you can easily heat normal MREs (Meals Ready to Eat) with the HEAT.me heating pad. The heating pad works in a similar way to the Flameless Ration Heaters (FRH) that are included in many MRE packs. All you need to do is place the MRE in the HEAT.me lunch box, place the heating pad underneath, add 60 ml of water and close the lunch bag with the zipper.
The heating pad generates enough heat to warm MREs safely and evenly - without any external energy source. So you can also enjoy your MRE comfortably on the go or in emergency situations.
Fresh out of the protective packaging, the HEAT.me pad weighs 22g/0.8oz and after use approx. 45g/1.6oz.
The price of 0,99€ *For a HEAT.me pad may seem like an additional or possibly unnecessary cost factor at first glance, but when you look at the alternatives, it quickly becomes clear how favorable and advantageous the HEAT.me system actually is - especially in comparison to restaurants, delivery services or fast food outlets.

The price of 0,99€ for a HEAT.me pad per nose is hardly significant.
With the HEAT.me lunchbox and a HEAT.me pad for only €0.99 you can enjoy your meal flexibly, inexpensively and independently of power outlets or expensive restaurants. Whether you use cheap ready meals from the supermarket or go meal prepping - the savings compared to restaurant visits, rest stops, delivery services or even canteens are enormous.
* There are graduated prices for the heating pads. The prices vary between €1.29 and €0.99 - depending on the quantity.
Yes, you can use both snow and seawater to activate the HEAT.me Pad. The HEAT.me Pad works with any type of water - tap water, river water, seawater or melted snow. The only important thing is that you have about 60 ml of liquid to trigger the chemical reaction. If you use snow, you should melt it first to obtain the required amount of water.
Seawater does not have a negative effect on the pad's functionality. As the HEAT.me pad already uses salts for the heat reaction, the salt contained in seawater is not a problem. This means you can easily heat your meal even near the coast or in situations with limited access to drinking water.
No, the HEAT.me pads are neither toxic nor harmful to the environment. The materials used - magnesium, iron powder and salts - are non-toxic and environmentally friendly. They have been carefully selected to provide a safe and effective heat reaction without releasing harmful chemicals. The mixture is enclosed in a non-woven fabric that is also environmentally friendly.
After use, the pads leave no toxic residue and can simply be disposed of in normal household waste. However, it is important to allow the pad to cool completely before throwing it away. The production of HEAT.me pads follows high environmental standards to ensure that they are an eco-friendly solution for heating meals on the go.
So you can be sure that using HEAT.me pads will not endanger your health or the environment.
No, the smell you notice when heating is not toxic. This slight odor is caused by the chemical reaction between the water and the HEAT.me pad, more precisely by the reaction of the magnesium-iron alloy. Although the smell is perceptible, it does not pose a health risk and does not contain any harmful vapors or chemicals.
The HEAT.me pads are designed to be safe to use without releasing toxic substances. The odor usually disappears quickly and does not affect the food or the air quality. You can enjoy your meal without any worries.
Just be careful not to touch the pad directly while it is heating up, as it gets very hot.
The heating pads have a long shelf life as they are packaged in airtight and watertight aluminum foil. As long as the packaging remains intact and is not damaged, you can store the pads for several years. The exact shelf life is usually around 5 years, depending on the storage conditions.
To ensure maximum shelf life, the pads should be stored in a cool, dry place and protected from direct sunlight. If the packaging is opened or damaged, the pad can absorb moisture, which could impair its functionality. It is therefore important to keep the original packaging intact until use.
The milky liquid that you find at the bottom of the lunchbox (outside the food area) comes from the chemical reaction in the HEAT.me pad. It is produced when the water reacts with the magnesium, iron and salts in the pad. This liquid is a harmless by-product of heat generation.
The liquid is non-toxic and can simply be wiped up with a cloth. You should clean the lunchbox thoroughly after each heating to remove any residue. This liquid has no contact with your food and does not affect the function of the lunchbox or the heating result.
One more hint: Please don't get the idea of drinking this milky liquid.
The white deposit that you notice at the bottom of your lunch box after heating is completely harmless. This deposit consists mainly of minerals such as magnesium oxide, which are formed during the chemical reaction in the HEAT.me pad. It is a by-product of the reaction during which heat is generated.
This substance is non-toxic and can be easily wiped off with a damp cloth. You can touch the deposit without hesitation, but it is not suitable for consumption. Thoroughly cleaning the lunch box after use will completely remove the residue so that you can use it again as usual the next time you use it.
Yes, you can touch the HEAT.me pads with your bare hands before and after use as long as they are cold. However, you should not touch the pad during the heating process or immediately afterwards as it becomes very hot. A considerable amount of heat is generated during the chemical reaction, which can cause burns if the pad is touched directly.
Once the pad has cooled down completely, you can easily dispose of it. It is non-toxic and safe to handle as long as you follow the instructions and do not touch it while it is heating up.
With the HEAT.me Pad, you don't have to "start" a fire or a gas stove to heat your meal. Our Flameless Ration Heater (FRH) only requires a small amount of water - whether tap, river or sea water - and heats your food in just a few minutes. Unlike gas cartridges, you don't need to carry heavy equipment or look for a safe place to set up the stove. The heating pad works in almost all conditions and is ideal not only for lunch breaks, but also for outdoor adventures, emergency situations, humanitarian missions or military situations.
As there is no risk of open flames with the HEAT.me pad, you can also heat your lunchbox in areas where open fires are prohibited due to the risk of forest fires.
No, we strongly advise against using aluminum containers with the HEAT.me pads.
Technical explanation:
Our system is specially designed for use with Stainless steel lunch boxes or heat-resistant food pouches (MRE pouches), as they are also included in our lunchbox kits.
The reason for this lies in the chemistry of our heating pads:
Salt base: Our pads use a Magnesium-iron salt mixture, to start the reaction.
Electrolyte bath: When you add water to activate the pad, a hot salt water solution (an electrolyte) is produced.
Risk of corrosion: When your aluminum lunch box is placed in this hot electrolyte bath, a strong galvanic corrosion (similar to a battery).
Consequence: This reaction can attack the aluminum, cause pitting, damage the material and potentially release aluminum into your food.
Our recommendation: For safe and efficient heating, please use Only stainless steel containers or heat-resistant food bags intended for this purpose.
Yes, there are fundamental and important differences, especially in terms of safety, handling, weight and efficiency.
We have deliberately opted for the Magnesium-iron technology because it outperforms the quicklime heating pads in several key respects:
| Feature | HEAT.me (magnesium-based) | Competition (quicklime base) |
| Weight & pack size | Ultralight: Net only approx. 27 g per pad. | Heavier: Require approx. 60 g or more per pad (up to 3x as heavy like our pads). |
| Efficiency (water) | Only need 60 ml Water for activation. | Require approx. 200 ml Water for activation (via 3x as much water requirement). |
| End product & toxicity | Non-toxic magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2). Biodegradable and as Fertilizer usable. | Corrosive quicklime (Ca(OH)2). Can have a corrosive effect and is more problematic to dispose of. |
| Safety (chemical burns) | Not corrosive. The reaction is controlled and the end product is safe. | May come into contact with skin and eyes severe burns cause. |
| Max. temperature | Achieves a constant temperature of approx. 78°C (ideal for heating/steaming). | Can be used for a short time Very high temperatures (> 90°C) which increases the risk of scalding. |
Conclusion: The magnesium system is the modern, safer and more efficient choice. It offers you significant advantages in terms of weight and water consumption on the go and eliminates the risk of burns from corrosive residues.
Our heating system reaches up to 95°C in a matter of seconds to heat your meal quickly and efficiently. The temperature then drops in a controlled manner to approx. 80°C (after 15 minutes) and 65°C (after 30 minutes) to ensure lasting warmth.
Enjoy your hot meal anywhere without having to rely on external energy sources.
Just 60 ml of water is enough! If you don't have any water to hand, you can also use lemonade, tea, coffee, beer or melted snow (as an emergency solution).
Our heating pad mainly generates harmless water vapor and releases a small amount of hydrogen in a controlled manner (so small that there is no danger). This ensures safe and efficient heat generation.
